List of Nutritional Supplements

MY Top Three

So I get asked all the time for my list of supplements (thank you Rita for the reminder), so I will share my top three. As unfortunately due to the lack of nutrients from grassroot to plate, means that we should aim to top up with additional supplements where possible to ensure that we are receiving an extra boost of Vitamins and Minerals especially Micronutrients. Like Tesco says ‘every little helps’.

So what are Micronutrients?

The Word Health Organisation state that ‘Micronutrients are vitamins and minerals needed by the body in very small amounts. However, their impact on a body’s health are critical, and deficiency in any of them can cause severe and even life-threatening conditions.’

Most of us are aware of the Macronutrients required for the body eg. Carbohydrates, Protein, Fats and will have a general understanding about which food sources we can obtain them from. But if I said which foods can you get Zinc from for example, would you know?  Did you know a deficiency in Zinc may result in hair loss, eye and skin lesions, sexual dysfunction. Do you know food sources for Magnesium, Copper or Potassium?

Anyway because like many I am far too lazy to keep track of my Micronutrients and food sources, along with my balanced diet,  I take additional supplements (powdered or oil only) regularly, usually in my Smoothies, yogurt and if I am desperate water!!  I cant lie they don’t taste great but the benefits far outweigh the bad taste, especially as I regularly teach a lot of fitness classes too, so  I need to keep my energy up and immunity high.

So below is a list of 3 of my staple supplements which you can find in any health shop or online, there are obviously more, for example I also add Vitamin D3 and Cod Liver Oil too.

Okay anyway here are my 3 main supplements;

1. Moringa Powder (Moringa oleifera)

The benefits of Moringa are said to include calcium, iron and potassium, amino acids, Vitamin A, C, E, B2, B6, Magnesium, bioactive plant compounds, antioxidants and more! The research shows Moringa helps to protect and nourish the hair and skin, has anti-aging effects, treats swelling and inflammation, protects the liver, treats stomach upsets, fights foodborne bacterial infections, improve eye health, lower blood Glucose levels, provides an energy boost and stil more benefits! Moringa is suggested to be one of the most nutrient dense greens on the planet and this is why it is my No.1 go to supplement!

 2. Chlorella Powder

Chlorella contains Vitamin A, C, B1, B2, B9, K, D, zinc, iron, Omega 3’s, Magnesium, anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-tumour properties. One of the best things about this supplement is that it is said to help remove harmful toxins such as metals that we are unduly exposed to through pollution, lifestyle and environment. Chlorella helps to bind these heavy metals flushing them out of the system before they are absorbed in the body. Others benefits include helping to lower bad cholesterol, reducing high blood pressure, improves athletic Endurance, better lung functioning and boost immune health by increasing white blood cells which fight infection.

 3. Spirulina Powder

Now this is a quite a popular supplement, I started my journey with this one and I suppose its slightly easier on the palate than Moringa powder.  Spirulina contains protein, vitamins, minerals such as Copper, Riboflavin, Thaimin, Niacin, Calcium, Potassium and also has antioxidant properties. It also helps to manage inflammation, blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure, symptoms of hayfever, including itching and nasal congestion, gum disease and oral health and it may have value in protecting against cancer.

One thing that I love about the three I have mentioned and something that they all have in common is they are all green.. Think green, life, vitality, energising, alkaline Ph balancing nutritional power!

Whichever supplement you decide to use, do your own research and most importantly the advice is they are supplements and should not be used as a replacement for a balanced diet but as an added boost.  There are also many other beneficial supplements not included, feel free to contact me if you would like a personalised list.
