Black + Women Mental Health & Wellbeing Research

In 2017, for Black History Month, I conducted one of the first research studies into Black Women’s Mental Health & Wellbeing in the UK.  The impetus was that I was asked to provide some background information for another project and then realised there was little, if any direct research available for black women in the UK.  Even though my own experience indicated that there were many black women impacted in some way by mental health issues whether directly or via a family member. If I was in doubt the response to the call out for the focus groups was overwhelming, with black women contacting me daily to join.  However my research was aimed at providing a preventative approach to the many challenges and triggers experienced as opposed to presenting post mental illness analysis.

In June 2018, I organised an event to present the results which also included an awesome panellist of diverse women who discussed some of the findings from their standpoint.  It was a powerful and womb-felt!   I will be forever grateful for the support of everyone who completed the survey, shared their honest experiences, cried, healed and connected.  Hopefully this is my small part in helping to heal and empower my black sister queens and women of colour in general.

Below are a few slides from the full presentation but feel free to contact me for the full report.

Recently (June 2020) during Covid19 Lockdown,  I hosted an online event on The Impact of Racism on Mental Health with guest speakers ad contributors.
