Okay so most of us love a good story and you probably know the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, where Bella goes to the castle and meets the horrible beast, they fall in love and live happily ever after….blah blah. Anyway…lies, you should see Bella now, she looks bruck up, is tired and mash up from cleaning that big arse castle, while the beast has returned to his miserable self and smokes nuff ital as she downs half a bottle of wine just to get by! Yes mek dem tell real life tales to the children dem..who knows it might prepare them against some future f-ups!
Anyway, jokes a side, let me tell you a story called The Goddess & The Dog (#JackanoryGriotVibes)
Once upon a time, there was a beautiful smart goddess called Zarelisha, who lived in a faraway high ascension planet called Letopeckhanam. She was the youngest of the gods and goddesses, so was often ignored and at a times considered a bit troublesome. However, as a result Zarelisha was quite independent, naturally curious and would often venture further afield exploring and occasionally getting up to a likkle mischief. Zarelisha also had a very big heart and would often been found caring for creatures injured or hurt, using her healing powers, nursing them back to health.
Anyway, one day her clan planned a big exodus to visit another lower planet for a ‘gratitude’ retreat and Zarelisha was really excited to go, she craved to find something new to be grateful for and was also excited to explore her new planet (we all need a bit of drama sometimes). Once she arrived, she immediately set off alone to explore the new surroundings, with a stern warning from the others to be careful as this planet operated on a lower frequency, Zarelisha waved it off and went on her running’s. Exploring, she heard a commotion and saw a dog cowering whilst being attacked by other dogs. Being a caring goddess, Zarelisha rushed over fearlessly and shooed the other dogs away with fire and lightning, oh and a stick, she rushed to the dog’s aid. The dog appeared not only wounded, but hungry and unclean, she immediately began to nurse the dog, washing the dog till its coat was shining and new, provided some nourishment and eventually the once lifeless dog began to show signs of health and gave an appreciative bark. Zarelisha was excited to tell the others and rushed back to the clan but promised the dog she would return the next day.
Back with the clan, she excitedly told everyone what she had discovered, but rather than be happy, the clan warned her not to get too attached to the dog, to be careful, and most of all to guard her heart as it was the gateway to her soul, blah, blah, blah. Of course, Zarelisha ignored them and began to visit the dog daily, spending more energy, care and time.
For a while, like most fairy tales, everything seemed perfect and the dog and her were inseparable, till one day when they were playing, the dog bit her, it wasn’t a big bite, but enough to make her stop momentarily and cuss two bad word. Zarelisha assumed it may have been accident, but then it happened a few more times, on many different occasions. Confused and hurt, she decided to teach the dog a lesson but not visiting anymore. But after few days of mopping around by herself, still being ignored by the others, she missed the attention and fun she enjoyed with the dog. So, she decided to go back and visit the dog again, who upon seeing her equally seemed happy, jumping up and wagging its tail in excitement. That moment of fulfilment and feeling needed was priceless, so she spent more time and energy on the dog enjoying that feeling. However, the bites still continued, but because she felt like a top-dog-goddess, she stayed, ignoring the pain. The rest of the clan noticed her bite marks, tried to warn her again, they reminded her of her duty as a goddess, plus soon they would need to return from this low vibed plane. However, their words fell on deaf ears, as she remembered how many times they had ignored her, chastised her, whilst the dog provided her with happiness and so what, if she occasionally got bitten in the process it was worth it! Strangely she started getting use to the bites, tending to them less and less as they became bigger and more frequent. She would just dismiss it, put it down to the ill treatment the dog had received previously. She hoped that with time the dog would realise she was not like the others, would reciprocate her care and would stop biting.
Anyway, the day came for the clan to leave and Zarelisha was nowhere to be found they searched high and low, until eventually they found her liming with the dog. Growing in irritation, the clan told her they needed to leave and she should come NOW but she cussed them saying she was a ‘grown-arsed-hard-back’ goddess and had a right to leave when she was good and ready. She was facety like that! They left, hesitantly concerned about the dog and the bites but as a goddess with free will there was nothing they could do but promised she could reach them if she needed.
Zarelisha and the dog happily spent more time together, she ignored the bites which had gotten bigger and more frequent, still trying to chase and hold on to the now infrequent moments of happiness. One day after fasting and some meds, she decided that she would bring the dog with her on her ascension to her planet, what a win-win she thought! The dog at first seemed excited too and was ready to travel with her, but part way the dog kept on getting distracted by other dogs, even stopping to sniff the butts of some of the dogs that had caused the initial harm. Every so often, Zarelisha would have to stop and coax the dog along to continue. Worried that she may not be able to reach the clan, she decided to help speed things up by carrying the dog! Not only did the dog seem peed off to be carried but she became slower and weaker with the weight of the dog. She also began missing the clan’s guidance and her bites were getting worst, but strangey she still felt an overwhelming attachment and responsibility for the blasted dog.
One day, after receiving a bite so bad, she decided right there and then, she would stop carrying the dog. She looked at the dog and assessed that it was strong enough and didn’t require any support, actually it was her that was now severely wounded. But when she put the dog down, it didn’t move, she tried coaxing it along with nice treats, sweet words, cute tricks and one point she even tried dragging it! The dog just refused to move and remained where it was.
Zarelisha knew she could no longer carry the weight of the dog, she was tired and worn, her bites sore and plentiful and she no longer felt connected to that once beautiful, smart, carefree goddess she used to be. She began to long for the way things were before the dog, but now with so much time lost, and many ugly scars from her bites, frustration, anger, resentment and hurt she knew she couldn’t stay with the dog or carry the dog any longer. She mustered up the remaining goddess strength left and decided to embark alone, catch up with the clan, hoping the dog would come too and remember all the fun and care she provided. After all, had she not endured much pain and prioritised him over her clan! Swiftly but reluctantly, she began the lonely trek ascending by herself, trying to reconnect with the clan, occasionally looking back, hoping the dog would eventually move and come with her, after all she still had her big heart.
To this day Zarelisha is still travelling, still ascending, reaching her clan, without the dog, still hopeful but with many scars and wounds, reminders of her journey.
The End.
Did this story end as you expected? Would you consider this story a happy ending? Why did the clansman never return for Zarelisha? Or the dog travel with her? Who was the villain? What can we learn from the story? What part would you change or rewrite? Should there have been a hero to save her?
Although I made this story up, I wonder how many Zarelishas there are, wondering lost, unfulfilled, confused, hurt, hopeful, nursing wounds, covering scars… We all have our stories, should we share them more, learn more, develop more… Each day we wake up blessed to have an opportunity to recreate our stories, characters, scenes.
What is your happy ending? Sweet dreams.

Ps. oh and the punchline can be summed up by the Jamaican patois saying “sorry fi mawga dawg, mawga dawg tun roun & bite you”
