This heading sounds so deep, doesn’t it? It conjures an image of a goddess dressed in white, chanting and dancing around erotically and stamping on flowers and herbs. No, you can’t see it? Ok so it’s probably just me!
But the subject of spirituality and sexuality however, is really close to my heart and one that I feel needs to be acknowledge not just in terms of my blog but as part of my own health, wellbeing and development relating to my past sexual trauma. As well as hoping to encourage others to be unafraid and more open to speak and share their experience on sexuality, e.g. what were you taught about sexuality as a child, what have you learnt as an adult and how has this shaped your own sexuality today?
I have come of age where I definitely need to grow, develop and understand my unique feminine power and energy, so that I can heal and connect with my soul before expanding back into the universe from whence I came! I mean how many women have left the earth not fully recognising that they have such awesome feminine power and energy, not just their strength but their resilience combined with creativity, beauty, intuition and bountiful love. I reflect on my ancestors as I say this and I hope that some of these generational issues, are resolved and not being repeated through me.
Ironically this blog comes around the time Beyoncé has just finished her Formation song performed at the Super Bowl with a group of powerful looking black women representing a modern day Beyoncé-fied black panther crew. I won’t even comment specifically on the message, I just find the timing quite ironic as I personally do feel there is an increased awakening or shift at least publically/en masse of wombmen honouring their feminine energy and power.
Unfortunately I just feel its a shame that the issue of sexuality, especially female sexuality is still so devalued, ‘pornified’ and repressed, leaning on purely physical pleasure. Almost as if we have forgotten it’s spiritual and creative universal essence, beneficial for both men as givers and women as receivers. There seems to be more people who are happy to ignore or supress this spiritual sexual aspect, but at some point it will start seeping at the sides, rearing it ugly head saying ‘I more than just a fist in the air and a book on Karma Sutra!’
Deepak Chopra highlights that sexual energy is the primal and creative energy of the universe. The union is between flesh and spirit. And what a great connection that is.
You will especially know what I’m referring to if you have ever experienced Kundalini energy or should I say Kundalini awakening – OMG! I have had the displeasure or pleasure of experiencing kundalini and it definitely was not as ecstatic as some people make out. The sensations were so overwhelming and uncontrollable, that the only release for me at the time was through dance! Luckily the person I was dancing with ALL NIGHT was a Rasta man from Trinidad who had the moves to show Jagger! Whoaaa. Anyway it was alarming at the time as I didn’t understand the endless compulsion to move and gyrate my body. My friend who shall remain nameless was totally confused and worried about why from her perspective I was behaving like a hoochie hoe. Typically I’m the girl that never dances with anyone, so this event unbeknown to me was the creation of my alter ego –Oshun, who lets just say is slightly more liberated than Naomi. 🙂
Luckily after this event I met a spiritually centred lady who when relaying this experience, told me to look up kundalini and suggested that because I had been in a spiritual mode accompanied by prior fasting etc. I may have unintentionally awakened it. Well what an awakening! Apparently though I did not channel my kundalini energy correctly down or up through my chakras. Oh dear, call the chakra police!
All I know is I would definitely not be in a hurry to experience it again and I now empathise with dogs-on-heat and that overwhelming feeling to release an immense sexual energy. I won’t be humping any legs but believe me it’s beyond just physical horniness. BEYOND!
However maybe if I had not experienced this, I would never have really acknowledge that sexual energy and spiritual growth goes hand in hand and should be honoured, celebrated and expressed. I was never ever taught this as a child and none of my experiences as an adult reinforced this link. Therefore I feel strongly that other women and girls should learn and understand the importance of the Spiritual, Sexual Soul of a Wombman for their own personal development as well as collective energy. Regardless of how taboo the subject remains and how uncomfortable it may make people feel.
This connection needs to be explored in order to fully appreciate and gain all the benefits of our sexual energy not just physically, but experiencing oneness with the universe, free from ego to fuel and ignite all our ‘higher level’ wants, talents, creations, self-confidence etc. Where we are not just calling out ‘his’ name but being transported to different cosmic levels whilst heightening our unique feminine intuitive capabilities and wisdom. We need to begin to view and acknowledge that sexuality and spirituality is the clearest connection of mind-body-soul, or life force. On 3 levels these are;
- The physical – which is actual the innocent aspect of the body, related to feelings of lust, desire, and gratification that primal energy or need.
- The next is the heart/emotional level – which relates to how you express these physical desires, in order to experience the joy and deep rooted soul connection and physical bond.
- The last is our mind/mental- such as our beliefs, perceptions, that relate to our spiritual view and sexual practices.
From a chakra energy framework, we are talking about the chakra points stemming from the root to the heart and up towards your crown chakra. Recognising that all is sex and sex brings this all into being.
The importance and necessity of this work is evident when you begin to experience sexual or creative un-fulfilment, imbalance and dissatisfaction beyond just physical displeasure e.g. crying, sadness, guilt, void, frigidity, experiencing sex without sexual arousal. It then becomes necessary to examine certain blockages such as past trauma of sexual abuse and violence, denial, emotional issues e.g. lack of trust and religious or cultural restrictions like repression or guilt laden sexual desires.
Also recently there have been more and more methods and products flooding the market aimed to re-address the physical imbalance of our neglected female life force such as vagina cleanse, vagina steaming, vagina purging (pussy pearls), womb or fertility cleansing. These methods all help to remove toxins, stagnant blood, hormones that maybe linked to so many physical issues including fibroids and fertility. Beneficial to increase the circulation of the womb and supporting a healthy environment especially when combined with an intake of raw juices, herbs, massage and exercise.
However again with the modern era always looking towards a quick fix, let us not forget the ongoing spiritual sexual work that needs to be done in order to heal and enlighten our creative and intuitive feminine powers, fully accept and receive our male energy and acknowledge our femininity beyond sexual subjection and repression.
Let’s start with small practices such as providing personal names for our female scared gateway over and above vagina, fanny, yoni or pum pum! Let’s begin to honour the source of feminine energy by at least taking care of ‘her’, giving her a name and telling her thank you from time to time! Just as we focus on other aspects of health, wellbeing and personal development, let’s also add sexual mindfulness to the list.
Remember one of the authenticated sayings of Buddha”Enlightenment is in the vagina”.
